Graduate Housing Office Sponsors Karaoke Night

Recently, a large group of graduate and professional students sang and laughed the night away at Karaoke Heroes, Connecticut’s only dedicated Karaoke bar. The Yale Graduate Housing Office (GHO) organized this event at the popular Crown Street spot as part of their regular student programming initiative inviting residents from all of GHO’s dormitories.

As students belted out their favorite songs, others sampled some delicious local pizza and socialized with friends. They sang in English, Spanish, Korean and Mandarin—a noteworthy aspect of Karaoke Heroes musical selection. Song selections ranged from top 40 hits like The Fox and Rihanna to Disney treasures like the Little Mermaid to classics like Queen’s Bohemian’s Rhapsody.

“Everyone had so much fun. There were groups of people singing together and dancing.  We are going to plan another event in the spring,” said Resident Coordinator Lily Zeng.  Lily and Ray Zhou are RCs for the dormitory Helen Hadley Hall, home to almost 200 Yale graduate students.  Besides organizing the event, they both joined in the fun and sang several songs, including their signature duet “Phantom of the Opera.”  Esteban Cordero, an opera student at the Yale School of Music,  stole the show with an amazing rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.” Esteban is a high tenor, and received the only standing ovation of the night!

The GHO plans a variety of events throughout the year for their residents. In addition, to karaoke they have movie nights, pumpkin carving events, pizza study groups, bus trips to New York, and the Big E, and events for families with children.  “Programming continues to be an integral part of residential life within Graduate Housing. Our Resident Coordinators continue to work closely with our residents to develop programming venues that are important, exciting and well attended,” said George Longyear, Director of Graduate Housing & Fleet Management.

Over the Thanksgiving break there are several events planned with leftovers and more pizza from many of New Haven’s famous pizza restaurants.
